Matching Minwax Stain to Bruce Gunstock Oak

Before
Minwax Cherry 235 Stain

Overwhelmed?  We found Minwax Wood Finish Stain Cherry 235 matched our Bruce Gunstock Oak very well.  We bought 36" oak steps from Home Depot.  We stained them with 3 coats of stain and 3 coats of polyurethane.  With all the staining and sanding, it took us 4 weeks to complete this project part-time.
Minwax Wood Finish Stain Cherry 235 matched our Bruce Waltham Gunstock Oak!

  1. Stunning work! Wondering a couple things as we have Bruce Gunstock throughout our home and am thinking about doing the stairs.

    1. Is that white or red oak you used for the Newell and stairs?

    2. How long did you wait before wiping off stain?

    3. Did you bother to condition the wood, sand between coats etc.

Thanks again and what a match!

  2. We used red oak. We waited 20-30 minutes to wipe off the stain. I did a light sanding before my first stain application. I sanded between the coats of polyurethane only.

  3. I had the same problem finding a matching stain for our Bruce Gunstock wood. Thanks for the tip on Cherry 235. It did the trick and came as close as can be expected. We did the stairs in this. Thanks again. JTG

    1. We love Rustoleum products. We will definitely have to check the color out!

  7. We tried the Minwax Gunstock 231 Stain with the Bruce Gunstock Oak woodfloor. We found that the stain was too red. So I would not recommend using Minwax Gunstock 231 Stain with the Bruce Gunstock Oak woodfloor.

  8. I used 2 stains mixed together from minwax, 1 part Early American to 2 Parts Gunstock. She's a dead match..

  10. I have attempted every recommendation above with Minwax and Varathane. I am attempting to match Bruce/Armstrong Gunstock. I bought inset registers from Floor&Decor, $16.99. They will not take the stain. Is it possible it is a different species oak, young oak or something that looks like oak? It will not absorb stain line the Bruce/Gunstock does on the backside. This has driven me crazy. When I looked online at Reggie’s the registers were 4-5 time more, around $80 each vs. $16.99.

    1. Try wood conditioner if that doesnt work wipe the material with a damp cloth. Make look consistently damp not saturated. This will male the grain pop (open up) to take stain.Let dry. Do not sand.Try applying stain to that. If hardwood is over sanded too smooth it will actually not take stain as well. Rougher wood takes stain deeper

  11. Red Oak is the name but there are many Red Oak Trees. White oak does not absorbe stain as easily as red oak. These are some of the Red Oaks, Northern and Southern Red Oak, Black Oak, Laurel Oak, Swamp Oak, Water Oak, Willow Oak, Pin Oak.

  12. Amazing guys. I was trying to match Bruce Gunstock Oak color for a long time now. You guys are the saviors 🙏 I'm going to try both Minwax Wood Finish Stain Cherry 235 and 2:1 Gunstock:Early American Maple. Hope one of them matches.

  14. The cherry 235 was not dark enough for me. I ended up following the mix posted here of 2 gunstock to 1 early american and it was absolutely spot on (Thank you for posting, you saved me!). I stained on red oak and used 3 coats before applying polyurathane.

    1. I am also grateful for everyone who has offered suggestions in this thread. I really needed to match some bare red oak pieces and stair treads with my Bruce gunstock oak floors. The Minwax cherry was a bit red still, so I tried the 2-1 Minwax gunstock and early American. That was close, but still a touch too red. I ended up using 1-1 gunstock and early American. That matched perfectly. Without all of you, I wouldn’t have even known where to begin, so thanks! The lesson for anyone else who comes along and need to do this this is that every wood is a bit different, so start here and tweak to what works on your own wood.

  17. I’m needing to touch up my gunstock hardwood flooring and noticed using Minwax 235 matched great. The stairs look great ! I was wondering if the Minwax 235 matched the gunstock high gloss finish or the satin finish flooring
